  7. An issue of central importance for efficient electronic interchange
  8. and processing of mathematical documents is that of standard
  9. representation.  In order not to limit future possibilities, the
  10. representation should reflect structure, i.e., mathematical semantic
  11. content (rather than layout).  A completely faithful representation is
  12. neither feasible nor desirable.
  13.  
  14. The best chance to achieve a result within a short time horizon seems
  15. to be to agree on a selection of DTD's (Document Type Definitions) in
  16. the sense of SGML (Standardized General Markup Language) in order to
  17. define types of Mathematical Documents (Articles, Expressions, etc.).

  19. A committee with an aim as indicated above has just been formed as a
  20. sub-committee of a committee sponsored by AAP (American Association of
  21. Publishers).  The committee is chaired by William B. Woolf of the AMS
  22. (American Mathematical Society) and will base its work on suggestions
  23. and results already obtained by the following organizations or
  24. projects:

  28.        Arbortext
  29.        Euromath Project,
  30.        ISO (TR 9573)
  31.        TEI (Text Encoding Initiative)

  33. It is an absolute necessity that professional mathematicians take an
